Newcomer Family Support

The program offers newcomer families crisis counselling, group learning experiences, and in-home visits. The program helps families with complex needs to identify their strengthens and build on them by: 

  • assisting parents to develop effective management skills so they can parent their children in a more positive and healthy manner

  • teaching daily living skills and personal wellness in a Canadian cultural context

  • reducing destructive behaviors in families and strengthen the parent child attachment

  • reducing isolation and increasing involvement in community life

  • connecting parents with community resources.

The Newcomer Family Support Program provides newcomer families with prevention and early intervention services aimed to:

  • Reduce stress within family

  • Enhance the parent-child relationship

  • Promote good nutrition

  • Emphasize child safety

  • Promote positive parenting

  • Assist in establishing daily routines

  • Encourage healthy adult relationships

  • Establish connection to community resources

Eligible clients are Permanent residents of Canada and other Protected Persons. Please contact our office for more information on program eligibility. Program referrals are accepted from community organizations as well as client self-referral.

Parenting styles and knowledge vary from culture to culture. Newcomer parents may struggle with where to find reliable information and tips on how to parent their children in Canadian society. This program provides support to parents at a pace that they are comfortable learning at utilizing their strengths and existing knowledge.
